Vince Tañada urges artists to go beyond entertainment and confront rising social issues through transformative storytelling

MANILA, Philippines — The gala premiere of “Ang Bangkay,” the latest theater-to-film project by Vince Tañada, drew a full house on March 25, 2026, with tickets completely sold out—signaling strong public interest not only in the film’s suspense-driven narrative, but also in its deeper social message.

The event gathered notable directors, artists, and cultural figures, alongside the cast of the Philstagers Foundation, reinforcing the production’s roots in politically conscious theater.

ART BEYOND ENTERTAINMENT

In a statement during the premiere, Tañada emphasized the evolving role of artists in a time of mounting social and economic pressures.

“There is a necessity for art to transcend from being entertaining to becoming transformative,” he said, underscoring his shift from performer to educator.

The director argued that art must now function as a platform for awareness and engagement, particularly as Filipinos grapple with rising prices, social inequality, and everyday struggles.

“I have transcended from being an entertainer to becoming an educator,” Tañada added, stressing that artists must not remain passive amid ongoing societal challenges.

CINEMA AS POLITICAL COMMENTARY

While “Ang Bangkay” delivers suspense and gripping storytelling, its underlying narrative reflects broader societal tensions—mirroring real-world anxieties and encouraging audiences to confront uncomfortable truths.

Tañada maintained that films and theatrical works should not only provide escape, but also provoke thought and action.

“At a time when we are facing multiple crises, art should inspire people not just to feel—but to think, to speak, and to act,” he said.

A CALL FOR ENGAGED CITIZENSHIP

Beyond its cinematic appeal, the film positions itself as a call to civic awareness. Tañada highlighted the responsibility of artists, musicians, and storytellers to contribute to public discourse and nation-building.

He noted that creative expression can serve as a powerful force in encouraging citizens to become more involved in social issues and democratic processes.

A FILM THAT RESONATES

Early viewers described “Ang Bangkay” as a tightly paced, suspense-filled film where “every minute counts,” but one that also leaves a lasting impression about society and collective responsibility.

As the film gains traction following its sold-out premiere, it reflects a growing appetite among Filipino audiences for works that go beyond entertainment—offering instead a mirror to society and a challenge to confront it.
