Senator cites procedural gaps and urges a cautious, informed approach amid sensitive West Philippine Sea issues
PASAY — Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has called for a proposed Senate resolution related to statements by the Chinese Embassy to be first taken up in a committee hearing before being elevated to plenary deliberations.
In a letter addressed to Senate President Vicente Sotto III dated January 27, Cayetano said the matter is highly sensitive and raised concerns over what he described as procedural shortcomings. These include the alleged lack of prior notice to minority senators and the absence of the item from the Senate’s weekly agenda.
Cayetano stressed that a committee hearing would allow the Senate to hear directly from the Department of Foreign Affairs and subject-matter experts, providing lawmakers with a fuller understanding of the broader context, existing diplomatic engagements, and the potential implications of any Senate action.
He underscored the need for a careful, responsible, and measured response, particularly given the delicate situation in the West Philippine Sea and the country’s broader foreign relations.
The senator clarified that his call is intended to ensure that any move by the Senate is guided by due process and ultimately serves the national interest.
