The landmark measure creates an independent nuclear watchdog, ensuring strict safety standards while expanding the peaceful use of nuclear technology in energy, medicine, and agriculture.
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has championed the Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act, a landmark measure that establishes the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM) to ensure the safe, responsible, and peaceful use of nuclear technology in the country.
The law, signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in September 2025, aims to expand the application of nuclear technology beyond clean energy, extending its benefits to the fields of medicine and agriculture, while maintaining strict safeguards for public safety and environmental protection.
According to the government, the measure sets clear and stringent regulatory standards and safety protocols—an initiative strongly pushed by Senator Cayetano to ensure that technological advancement goes hand in hand with accountability, sustainability, and national development.
