Public funds back disaster response, healthcare, and environmental initiatives for 2026.
Barangay Fortune Captain Paeng Teope shared how government funds are being utilized to support programs that directly address the needs of the community.
According to Captain Teope, barangay programs are based on the suggestions and recommendations of residents, which serve as the foundation for the Barangay Council in crafting the 2026 annual budget.
“We asked for the suggestions of our residents, and these became the basis for the programs included in our annual budget,” Teope said.
One of the barangay’s top priorities is disaster preparedness, particularly in response to fire and flooding incidents. Barangay Fortune currently operates two fire trucks under its Fire Brigade, enabling the barangay to respond not only within its jurisdiction but also to neighboring barangays and nearby areas of Marikina City.
The barangay has also deployed personnel and equipment for clearing operations, especially in areas affected by mud and debris following floods.
Health services have likewise been strengthened, particularly for residents with serious medical conditions such as dialysis patients. With the support of Community Health Workers, additional personnel, and the barangay’s Patient Transport Vehicle and ambulance, continuous and accessible medical services are ensured.
Environmental programs are also in place, including the operation of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through a dual-drum composting machine. The barangay plans to acquire an additional unit to further expand composting of biodegradable waste.
“There is no longer any reason not to practice waste segregation, as our collection of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste is regular,” Teope added.
At the same time, the Barangay Fortune Fire Brigade will continue to undergo regular safety trainings starting March, alongside the expansion of fire hydrants and the strengthening of barangay road maintenance teams to keep roads safe and passable.
Captain Teope emphasized that the ultimate goal of the barangay leadership is to build a self-resilient community—one that can respond effectively to major disasters and provide essential services to residents even during emergencies.
This is particularly important, he noted, as Barangay Fortune is located in one of the outer areas of Marikina, farther from the city center where assistance may take longer to arrive.
“Our goal is that even in the event of a major disaster, the barangay is prepared and capable of meeting the basic needs of our residents,” Teope said.
Overall, Barangay Fortune aims to continuously strengthen its programs on safety, health, sanitation, and infrastructure to ensure a safe, prepared, and resilient community for all. For News Video: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Cwkz2JTfz/
