Amid rising fuel and food prices, senator highlights the power of inner strength and faith to endure economic hardship

As Filipinos continue to feel the strain of soaring fuel and food prices, Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano emphasized that there remains a source of strength that does not run dry—what he calls “spiritual fuel.”

In a vlog released during the observance of Holy Week, Cayetano likened faith to gasoline, underscoring its importance in sustaining individuals through life’s challenges.

“If a vehicle cannot run without fuel, the same is true for us—we cannot move forward without inner strength,” he explained.

According to the senator, many people today are experiencing burnout and exhaustion—both mentally and physically—largely due to the weight of ongoing economic difficulties. However, he noted that such struggles are often intensified when individuals lose their connection with God.

“When the Lord is absent from our hearts, it feels as though we are being drained—overwhelmed and consumed by our problems,” he said.

Cayetano stressed the importance of nurturing one’s spiritual well-being through simple yet meaningful practices, including setting aside quiet time, engaging in prayer, and dedicating moments for oneself and family. These, he said, serve as vital sources of renewed strength and resilience.

Amid global crises that continue to drive up prices, Cayetano acknowledged that many factors remain beyond individual control. Nevertheless, he maintained that this does not render people powerless.

“We are not helpless. Everyone has a role to play—the government, the private sector, the media, and each of us as individuals,” he said.

In closing, the senator encouraged Filipinos to remain hopeful and to seek opportunities even in difficult times.

“Sometimes, you need to take a step back in order to move forward more effectively. Pray, reflect, and keep going,” he added.
